I spent Saturday morning at my favorite whoring corner….Super Target. It was that time again, the vittles were running low, along with a few essentials, such as:
Yes, the swish and spit Dixie cup has become an essential now that the boys are old enough to not swallow the toothpaste. The previous box of cups I bought were SpongBob but I came to dislike the SpongeBob cups because of the fights I had to negotiate over who got the Patrick cup and who got Spongebob. So I decided to neutralize the debate with my next purchase.
I’m standing in Target, choosing between the variety of Dixie cups. They can have 5 different types of Dixie cups but can’t stock my coffee creamer for pete’s sake. I see the seashell cups and decide to go with that because it’s so “beachy” and since we live close to the beach, it fits! The deep thought I put into the Dixie cup….what an amazing brain I have. Where’s my honorary doctorate in art appreciation?
I place the box in the boy’s bathroom and forget about the seashell cups. Until…..
This morning the Heir asks me to open the box so he can have a cup and he looks at the cups and says….
“Hey look! That cup has an Ammonite on it! It’s a cousin to a nautilus.”
Just for your enlightenment, I’ll tell you that an ammonite is an extinct cephalopod that inhabited coiled shells, such as the green shell front and center on the cup. These shells date back before the Jurassic period and are related to the Nautilus, which is still around today.
And I thought I was just picking up more swish and spit cups.
This educational moment brought to you by Professor Payton, aka the Prince of Sharks. We’ve covered limpets and ammonites so far. Stay tuned for more lessons in exotic, little-known, possibly extinct sea creatures.

I was thinking as I read about the cups, “oooh Spongebob – the kids would love that!” and as soon as I got to your next sentence with the arguing I could totally picture my two doing just the same, so I have nixed that idea.
there’s NOTHING like a good trip to Target. I’m headed there this morning and I can’t wait!
That is so cool! Payton must have been subconsiously influencing your Target shopping…
That kid you birthed, I’m amazed.
We’re still teaching the spit thing and it’s not going well – still dealing with diapers too, so I shouldn’t be surprised!
You have such a sweet and smart little boy.
What an amazing little boy…I love these stories.
I also love hearing Target stories….since Canada doesn’t have any….oh, how I long to see the inside of a Target store…but alas, I will have to be content with watching the cool commercials….
We are supposed to get a Target sometime this century. I need to start saving now.
And I absolutely laughed when the Heir noticed what kind of sea creatures were on the cup. That is just classic. If anything, these blogs are going to make the best scrapbooks for our kids.
