Forgive me Target, I have sinned. It has been two weeks since my last expenditure.

But I have stopped lusting over Mr. Hottie McHotman, so really I am a good girl and don’t deserve to go to hell.

Ok, I only stopped because he doesn’t work there anymore, which ties in quite nicely with my convenient belief that hell isn’t a real place. It also helps that I have a very secure husband who will read this and not get mad and demand sexual rights over me. Ok, so he might demand the sexual rights after reading about Mr. Hottie, but he won’t get mad.

Not only did Mr. Hottie McHotman leave, but the deli department stopped carrying my favorite fresh mait.

Then I discovered the new Wal-Mart carries my favorite wine and it’s a whole $.85 cheaper than Target.

I’m afraid I have to admit I have become a Wal-Mart shopper again.

The process of my Target detox has been surprisingly painless, though I do sorely miss the Market Pantry brand canned goods all lined up pretty in my pantry. There is something about that red and white can label that makes buying cheaper store brand seem not so cheap.

The GV brand is ugly, just plain ugly. Ugly to the point I almost don’t want to let anyone know I buy Wal Mart green beans.

But Target green beans, well, that’s white-collar class right there. Market Pantry isn’t cheap…that’s white collar people using their money wisely. But that ugly GV brand…that’s blue collar worker cain’t afford no better.

Truth be told, the main reason I have fallen off the Target wagon is that new Super Wal-Mart opened up less than 5 miles from my house. It’s a five minute drive versus a fifteen minute drive to the Super Target.

And have you seen the gas prices? I need a stiff drink before I fill up so I won’t hyperventilate.

Five years ago I could fill the van up for 35.00. Now it’s 70.00 a tank, but that was three weeks ago when gas was cheap. Remember those cheaper days way back last month when it was, oh, around $3.00 a gallon? I’m sure I’ll push 75.00 next fill up.

On top of the gas, I’m also to the point I need to add a heavy dose of Irish Cream to my to-go coffee when I head to the grocery store every Friday morning.

Because damn. I’m always running out of grocery money.

By the way, the Irish Creme is truly for medicinal purposes. Some pick Prozac, I pick liquor. Don’t insinuate I have a drinking problem and I won’t insinuate you have a drug problem.

I swear just six months ago I could take care of the groceries for around 475.00 a month. Now it’s good if I stay under 600.00, which rarely happens. And my shopping/cooking habits haven’t changed. The same goes for our eating habits. No change.

Target may have won the marketing mind game that their store brand products are some how higher class than Wal-Mart, but Wal-Mart won the marketing mind game of saving money.

Screw dropping 10 lbs to look hot. I need to diet for economic reasons. And maybe with that $.85 I save on wine at Wal-Mart I can splurge and buy some Green Giant green beans.

Is anyone else getting double sticker shock at the pump and the grocery store? Or do I have a have a leak in the budget somewhere, say a leak of a wine-ish sort?

Please tell me I’m not alone in this and I won’t have to give up my wine habit? Which is totally not an option anyway. I’ve already sacrificed my shoe fetish. For the love of god, I must have something!

P.S. Before you say I simply will have to give up both my shoe and wine habit, let me tell you this. Magnum PI is coming to our house for dinner tomorrow night. Think how boring of a blog I would have for you on Monday if I didn’t have my wine.

Gas prices are nuts. My Tank takes Premium, so I’m clearly beyond a nut case myself. But who would I sell it to? Husband does all the grocery shopping so that’s his problem.

  2. Karen says:

Frankly the wine is more important than the green beans. Mommy with no wine is good for NO ONE! And the more wine you drink, the less you drive, the more money you save on gas. See it all works out!

  3. Trish says:

I’ve been a loyal Target shopper until the Super Wal-Mart recently moved into my area. Their cheap prices have sucked me in big time. Not too mention I can buy groceries, clothes for the kids, tires for the car, fertilizer for the lawn, get my nails done, have an eye exam, do some banking AND get a Subway sandwich for lunch all in one place.

  4. JoeInVegas says:

Oh, the evil W@lmart empire takes over another one. Keep the wine, it’s healthy, and the Pope drinks it too!

  5. MommyCosm says:

Oh, no. Please don’t give up the wine. Not the wine. Gas and food prices are crazy everywhere right now.

    I like karen’s theory.

And now that I have a Super Wal Mart, I favor it over Target. However, Target so kicks ass over a regular Wal Mart.

No, you’re not imagining it – the cost of groceries has jumped several times recently, along with the damn petrol prices!
I am so grateful I insisted on buying a Toyota when my husband wanted a pick-up truck – 38 miles to the gallon is a beautiful thing.
We’ve switched to eating meat as a side dish, anymore, and bulking up the beans and veggies, though fresh veggies and fruit is almost as pricey as buying meat. I’m thinking we might need to take up canning to cut our costs further.

Anything besides shopping at the Death Star – uh, Walmart.

  7. Just A Girl says:

I have always driven the extra 10 minutes for Target. I can not stand WalMart.

Our grocery bill for five people is about $350 a month. I suggest you start clipping the coupons.

My Neon in 1998 (purchase date) took $11.00 to fill. Last night it took $34.00.

Hubby has been doing the grocery shopping lately, but I keep hearing about the high prices and I do occasionally look at the checkbook and I see how much he spent and how little we have to eat!

Gas prices are going to cause me to drink a little extra everyday, as Karen said, less driving means you save on gas. I have sat in the parking lot and watched the gas prices go up twice in an hour. Really never saw them get a delivery but the price went up twice!

  9. Annie says:

I just did groceries this morning – at Walmart :) Every week the bill goes up and up – and the amount in the cart stays the same, or is less. It’s horrible.

I can’t bitch about gas to my family – they don’t want to hear it – it’s at $10 a gallon in Ireland as of last week – and it’s going up at the same rate there as it is here!

Gas & Groceries are crazy… We are a household of 2. We spend average $500 a month, that has gone over $600 a month in the past year. It’s just crazy.

We do have a nice small compact car though. That allows us to keep our beer, wine and/or Rum. No drinking and driving though, we’re home drunks.

  11. Beckie says:

Stuff is HORRIBLY more expensive!!! Even if you don’t count the $3.56 a gal for gas, EVERYTHING else has gone up a lot. About 6 weeks ago a 35lb jug of oil that we use in the stands cost $18 (already up from $11-13 from a year or 2 ago). Now the exact same oil is over $32 a jug. Same with flour, and a jillion other things. If I didn’t live so far away from everything, maybe I wouldn’t have to be a hermit.

  12. Ali says:

you have just completely made my day…since we have wal-mart in CAnada!! wahoo!

  13. Christy says:

Whats that? I am invited for dinner? Thanks! I want to see this impressive chest hair myself! And yes I mainly shop at walmart cause its faster to get in a out. I am also having sticker shock at the pumps and the cash register. Thats ok a whole summer of eating at chickfila instead of Sabor should help our checkbooks!

  14. Sugarplum's Mom says:

It’s not just you, it’s horrible right now. The gas here is up to $4.00 per gallon now and the groceries are more expensive because of the gas prices and the cost to transport the goods. I heard on the news yesterday the IRS is starting to send out the tax rebate checks a week early (next week) because of the pain at the pump and grocery store right now.

  16. Ashlea says:

i just paid 5.95 for vegetable oil! Thats what i pay for olive oil.
WTF?!?! i don’t think anything i buy costs less than 3.50.
Not gas, not milk, not rice…..
it used to be you paid 4 dollars on splurges like Starbucks….
    its nutty.

  17. Kelley says:

Prices are insane on this side of the world too.

We are bringing in almost double the cash as last year and still in the same position.

Target here doesn’t sell food. Just over priced junk.

  18. laughingatchaos says:

It just keeps getting worse. Gas keeps getting higher, food keeps going up, utilities are skyrocketing. It’s insane. But don’t give up the wine. I consider it medicinal. ;)

  19. Jen says:

Alls I’m sayin is that there is something seriously wrong when OPEC has us thinking that 3.00 a gallon is cheap…And don’t get me started on grocery prices.

And I don’t even do the shopping, and I’m not old enough to drive, so forget a car. I still think it’s rediculous.

  20. Smiling Mom says:

$3.99. That’s the price of gas at the closest gas station to my house. I’m so not a fan.

  21. jeanie says:

Our fuel is currently 136.9c per litre.

Converted to you that is $4.84 of your money per gallon.

I live in the cheap state for fuel here – it went up 10c last week for no good reason. Funny how it doesn’t go down as easily.

As Kelley said, Target only sells junk here and we have no Wal-Mart.

  22. 'cuz I'm the mommy, that's why! says:

We’re lucky to be in Alabama – in those places with big cities, prices are even worse (although 4.45 /gal for gas and over $5.00 /gal for milk is effing ridiculous as I can remember .99 and 3.00 respectively – in the last 15 years!)I sure hope they pass that bill about taking sales tax off groceries!

  24. Terri says:

    you crack me up! lol

  25. Devilish Southern Belle says:

I am like you….it hurts to fill up. And if I wasn’t driving at the time, I’m sure I’d be liquoring up to deal with it as well. I guess groceries have gotten so expensive because the gas to transport them from the farm/factory to the distribution centers to the stores. I don’t even live close enough to any grocery stores to walk to them and struggle back with my groceries, or I swear I’d do that!
