I’m having a Kotex, err, I mean Kodak crisis. Help me, please!
Posted by Heather in A Bunch of NothingFor a moment there, I forgot I can talk about things other than my girlie bits and other bodily functions. Novelty is fun!
Two days before Halloween, my 3-year-old Canon PowerShot A95 digital camera died.
Just how dead is it?
This dead…
That’s pretty much a flat liner, wouldn’t you say?
This is a photographic emergency, people! TWO days before Halloween! Actually, just one day! A mother can’t not have a camera on Halloween. It’s in the by-laws or something.
I especially can’t not have a camera on Halloween. Hello? Don’t forget Payton’s costume choice last year. I’m a Naked Sole! My costume masterpiece so far in life.
You ought to know my Payton hasn’t undergone any vast personality changes and suddenly decided to go mainstream in his costume attire. Oh no.
Payton is dressing up as an Australian Spotted Jellyfish.
Parker, for the 3rd year in a row, is dressing up as a Star Wars character. So far we’ve had Obi Wan, Anakin Skywalker, and now Darth Vadar. I don’t know who he will pick next year. Princess Leia maybe.
It’s very clear I MUST BUY A NEW CAMERA RIGHT NOW!
But which one? The choices are overwhelming! And cameras have gone from 5 megapixels to 10 in affordability in just 3 years! And I have to narrow it down to ONE in 24 hours!
This is my stress for the day, if all of the exclamation points don’t convey that. What can I say? I lead a charmed life.
Wally and I have salivated over the Canon Digital Rebel for, oh, forever and ever, Amen. When they came out with the new and improved Rebel, we almost wet our pants in excitement. However, due to the sticker price, all we ever did is fog up the display glass and dirty it up with our saliva.
We have good intentions, Wally and I. We used to be fucking awesome at photography. Wally was a former photo journalist back in the day when there were actual negatives to develop in darkrooms with chemicals and shit. You know, back during the STONE AGE.
We were a perfect team. I was the awesome photo stylist and Wally knew all about f-stops and shutter speed and light and all that technical stuff that makes my eyes glaze over and brain switch to technical ADD.
As we drooled over the Rebel, we envisioned all of the wonderful photographic bonding moments we would have as parents. It would be great for our marriage, to have this hobby where we excel as partners!
Then reality hit and instead, we’ve bonded over cleaning skid marks out of the boys’ toilet and eight years of wiping butts that has now progressed to a certain 5-year-old running out of the bathroom, naked from the waist down, bending over right in front of us and asking us if he wiped good enough.
Nothing bonds you together like a doo-doo smeared butt right in your face. That’s a Kodak moment even Kodak can’t touch, which is a good thing because Wally doesn’t like Kodak anyway.
Wally is looking only at Canon and Nikon point and shoot cameras. My technology ADD is kicking in and I find myself yawning and not really caring.
I just want to take pictures of my kids tomorrow night, and as nice as the Rebel is, I still require a smaller, easy to carry in my pocket or purse point & shoot camera. And I’m not forking out $1000 for a camera within the next 24 hours.
So please, tell me what you like or don’t like about your point and shoot digital camera. Know of a really good one? Share the knowledge! Know one that’s a piece of crap? Let me know! I’m working on a time crunch and it’s driving my anal-retentive self crazy that I can’t spend days and days researching the best one.
(Hold me)
Imagine if I couldn’t share with you pictures of the Australian spotted jellyfish costume and yet another Stars Wars costume.
That would be a travesty of blogospheric proportion.

WE LOOOVVVED our Canon digital Elph… not sure if they still make such a piece or not… small, fit in your pocket – which ended up being the downfall of said camera, due to my hubby SITTING on it in his back pocket. But we loved it while we could… good luck… one thing I do highly recommend – if your camera shop has an extended warranty, really check it out. We used C*ord camera here in OH, and they offer replacement or free repair for 3 years… can i just tell you I have gotten 4 new cameras during that time – truly worth the $…
Debbie: The Elph is one Wally has on the list. Thanks for the info!
H (can I call you H?)
My husband got himself the Nikon Coolpix S600 and absolutely LOVES it. It’s a great camera to be able to pocket and go. He likes it b/c it’s small, yet there are creative zones on it to satisfy the photographer in him.
Good luck!

If you just want a basic digital camera…go with the cheapest Canon you can find. I got the $179 Canon at Best Buy and it beat the crap out of my $800 digital.
However, I think you should just break down and get the SLR. Just do it…you won’t regret it.
i have an slr and a point and shoot. the p&s i have is the canon sd950. i love it and it's relatively inexpensive.
I LOVE my Sony Alpha SLR. It’s is the shizznit!! if you’re going for smaller, i love my cybershot too!

No advice for you on the camera-I’m a die hard Rebel XT gal.
However, my eldest is going as Leia this year, so if you need to borrow her costume for your youngest next year, we’ve got the wig and everything.
We have the canon Powershot SD850 IS (digital Elph) and it is an AWESOME point and shoot. Go get it now. Buy the extended warranty. oh and get the one with the image stabilizer. You will thank me later, so you’re welcome.
I have a Sony Cyber-shot S750, and I REALLY love it. I think they have one that is a step up now, though. I adore my camera, and have NO complaints about it. Any photo issues have been all user-related! LOL!
I just bought a new camera this summer. I looked at the Canons and Nixons, but wasn't that impressed. Almost got the Nixon Coolpix, but evidently my heart will always be with Sony. That said I am so far from a professional photographer I don't think we are even on the same planet.
I got the Sony DSC-H50 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8757268&st=DSC-H50&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1202650703335) I liked the zoom, the stablization, the face recongination, the no cord charging, USB cord (I think that is what it is called) and, I think, ability to make my pictures look great. Basically, this camera can help me with the problems I have with taking a picture, which must be a shaky hand and no ability to pick out faces. I came to this conclusion after spending 30 minutes trying all the cameras set up at Best Buy. It was all very scientific.
Good luck.
I am camera dumb, so no help from me! BUT I have faith you’ll make an awesome choice and I can’t wait to see the Australian Spotted Jellyfish.
I am a big Canon fan, so when I recently decided to get a new point and shoot, I wanted to stick to the Canon family. I finally decided on this one, http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=16718, and I love it! It's small, the LCD screen is 3", it has image stabilization and the ability to go fully manual (minus focusing). Plus it has a ton of auto settings when you don't feel like messing with it. Oh and the video quality is amazing!
Buy one of the disposable digital cameras for Hween and then agonize over your permanent decision for as long as you like. Just an idea…..
We’re a Nikon Family. We have a D80 for the REALLY QUALITY pictures and I carry a coolpix p80 that I carry around with me for on-the go and low-quality video. It has the most awesome lens on a point-n-shoot evah. and you can control all the shutter speeds, etc for your techie delight. We love Nikon!

I have a Canon Power Shot (ELPH) and it rocks…
I got a Cannon PowerShot S5IS for my birthday and love it. However it’s a bit heavy in my purse. But I figure that’s the price I pay for wanting a really good zoom.
You must get some pictures of the Australian Spotted Jellyfish! Go buy a camera woman!
I have a Canon Powershot SD1100is. LOVING it. Great little point and shoot, and you can’t beat the price for an 8MP. Word of caution, never buy a Powershot without the image stabilizer, my old one all but crapped out, the pics all looked like I had Parkinsons or something.
What, you can’t borrow a camera for one night?
Of course, this is the mom that almost always forgets the camera when we go anywhere or do anything. Never mind. I have nothing to offer you.
i LOVE my casio exlim (or something like that). it’s got a quick shutter speed, several different awesome settings, takes great pictures at night, even without the flash, and it’s little.
also? jake is going to be a storm trooper. yay star wars!
We have the Canon Rebel and had grand ideas of learning to use it, but haven’t. Does Wally give lessons?
